Moodle

Classroom workshop series
This classroom workshop series (three 2.5-hour sessions) will teach faculty and instructors the basics of building a Moodle course. Light refreshments will be provided.


Online workshop series

This two-week online workshop will teach participants the basics of building a Moodle course. Each day 1-2 new Moodle concepts will be introduced. Participants should expect to spend approx. 30 minutes each day on learning activities, plus the time needed to implement chosen concepts and features into their Moodle course(s). The instructor will be available via Moodle as well as by phone or email.
Seating is limited to ten (10) participants.


Upon completion of both workshop types (face-to-face or online), participants will be able to:

  • add a TA or other Calvin users to a Moodle course
  • post syllabus and other course content into their Moodle course
  • customize their course environment using Moodle resources and activities
  • post, collect and grade student assignments
  • create announcements using the News forum & Announcements
  • communicate with students using various communication methods provided by Moodle
  • create question pools
  • create and administer surveys and quizzes
  • provide timely feedback to students
  • create and organize their gradebook
  • weight items in the gradebook
  • much more

Moodle for organization leaders & administrative assistants

This two-hour classroom workshop is designed for organization leaders and those who will be supporting faculty who use Moodle. Topics include: basic Moodle interface, adding & removing users, creating & using groups, communication, adding activities & resources, forums, blogs & wikis.


Moodle: Getting started

This faculty development workshop serves as an introduction for those interested in using Moodle to enhance their course(s). By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • post syllabus and other course content into their Moodle course
  • customize their course environment using Resources and Activities
  • posting and collecting student assignments
  • create announcements using the News forum & Announcements


Moodle: Communication, Student Accountability and Collaborative Learning

In this faculty development workshop we explore the various communication features available in Moodle and how they may effectively be used in your course(s). Participants will investigate how these tools can be used to create an interactive and collaborative learning environment. During the workshop, the following methods of digital communication will be introduced:

  • assignments
  • forums and journaling
  • e-mail
  • groups


Moodle: Assessment, feedback and the gradebook

Participants in this faculty development workshop will learn how to use the quizzing feature for on-line assessments and surveys. The Moodle Gradebook will also be featured along with statistical tools to explore course utilization, student tracking and weighting grades. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • create question pools
  • create and administer surveys and quizzes
  • provide timely feedback to students
  • weight items in the gradebook
  • drop the lowest grade from a grouping of scores

Teaching and Learning

The Teaching & Learning team, along with Calvin Information Technology, offers a variety of technology learning opportunities.

Atomic Learning (AL) is an online technology training library that provides thousands of short, video tutorials on more than one-hundred of the most commonly used software applications. Atomic Learning can be accessed through Moodle (moodle.calvin.edu), twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (24/7). To access Atomic Learning:

 

  • Log into Moodle.
  • Click the Atomic Learning link from the Support box at the bottom of every Moodle page.
  • Log into Atomic Learning using your Calvin username and passphrase.

 

Faculty Workshops are designed to teach faculty and instructors how to implement and use available educational technologies. These collaborative face-to-face &/or online workshops feature pedagogical discussions and best practices, paired with software &/or hardware training. Registration is required.

Technology Workshops teach participants how to use commonly utilized software here on campus. These "hands-on" workshops scheduled periodically throughout the year, with most of the workshops being offered during the summer months. Technology workshops are typically 2 - 2 1/2 hours in length. Registration is required.

LunchBytes are offered during the lunch hour and are designed to quickly present software other educational technologies, but may also include some discussion &/or collaboration. Attendees are invited to bring and enjoy their lunch while viewing the presentation. LunchBytes are typically 45-50 minutes in length.
